Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) detection

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the causative agent of Gonorrhoea, a preventable and curable sexually transmitted bacterial infection, which is primarily transmitted through vaginal, oral and anal sex. Gonorrhoea causes different symptoms in women and men. Women often feel no symptoms, but untreated infection can lead to infertility and problems during pregnancy. Common symptoms in men include pain or burning when urinating, discharge from the penis and sometimes pain in the testes. Gonorrhoea can be passed from a pregnant mother to her baby and can increase the risk of getting and spreading HIV.

Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) is the recommended method for initial screening or testing for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infections.
